Obituary for Mary T. Holton (O'Connell)

Watervliet – Mary T. Holton, 92, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 20, 2018.

The daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Walsh O’Connell, Mary was born in Troy and had lived all of her life in Watervliet.
A graduate of St. Patrick’s School, Catholic Central High School Class of 1943 and the College of St. Rose, Albany, Class of 1946, she received her Master’s Degree from the New York State Teachers College, now SUNY at Albany. After teaching briefly at Laurens Central School and the central school in Hillsdale, she became the secretary to the Watervliet Superintendent of Schools, a position she held for five years before her marriage. After her children were all in school she purchased the Elizabeth J. O’Connell Insurance Agency from her mother and operated it as an Independent Insurance Agency from 1968 to 1988 when she retired. After retirement she and her husband traveled the United States in a motor home visiting every state, including two trips to Alaska. Mrs. Holton was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Church in Watervliet, a past president of the former Rosary Society, a Eucharistic Minister, charter member of the Craft Guild and Bingo team. She was a volunteer at the Watervliet Public Library for many years and became coordinator of volunteers as well as a member of the book discussion group and the book repair group.

She was the beloved wife for 59 years of the late Thomas R. Holton who died on July 14, 2012. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Mary and Thomas Reiter of Delanson, Beth and Donald Dever of Schoharie, Tricia and Daniel Razzano of Poestenkill, Teresa and Michael Alpaugh of Mullica Hill, NJ and Eileen and David Paluszek of Farmington, NH, Also surviving are her 19 grandchildren, Beth Foster (Mac), Katie Reiter, Patrick, Tim and Bob Harko, Ben (Celia), Jess and Erika Dever, Danny, Dominic and Brianna Razzano, Claire, Kelley, Kyle and Ryan Alpaugh and Mikaela, John, Alexandra and Matthew Paluszek; four great-grandchildren, Aiden Harko, Jason and Jenna Dever and Thomas Foster; her sister and brother, Helen Lettko of Troy and James O’Connell of Skaneateles, NY and several nieces and nepehws. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was pre-deceased by her oldest grandson, Thomas Reiter, Jr. on July 29, 2000 and her sister Betty Wilson.

Mary’s funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:30 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10 am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church, Watervliet, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Donald Rutherford. The Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Mary’s family on Wednesday from 4 until 7 pm at the funeral home.
